My Winter Reading List

My Winter Reading List

This is the time of year when we have a couple of weeks off and don't know what to do with ourselves. I have to constantly remind myself to do little things like reading otherwise I'd spend my whole time off watching Netflix! I have always been a bookworm, and hoard books like they're going extinct! Even though my Kindle is my travel companion, I miss having a physical book in my hand. When I feel like relaxing, I'm making myself reach for my books more, otherwise I just end up reading them when I go to bed (normally at a ridiculous time) and never really dedicate any proper time to them. I've decided to collate a selection of books to get into this winter- I'm currently reading Gone Girl, but I'm determined to get through as many of these as possible.

This first one is a major proud friend moment. This book is written by the amazing Lucy Sutcliffe, who was originally part of the pair Kaelyn and Lucy. They have sadly decided to part ways, but her memoir shares her story of finding herself and falling in love. I've always supported her and loved watching her life online, even after she moved to the US and I've always been a firm believer that we are all equal, regardless of gender, race and sexual orientation. I'm so excited to read this, well done Lucy!

I've only really got into self help and non-fiction books in the last few years, but after reading #GirlBoss by Sophia Amoruso I was hooked! I completely forgot I had this, but when I discovered it again, I knew I had to read it asap! The full title reads 'How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent and Lead' and it it honestly me all over! I'm quite a sensitive person who wears my heart on my sleeve, so when I feel vulnerable, I curl up into a little ball and refuse to come back out…this book challenges you  to stop striving to be perfect and to make your vulnerability a strength.

After watching the two films, I was hooked (and slightly terrified) by this series. I actually ordered this before I watched the films, so now I'm ready to see what the author has to offer! The first book of this teenage thriller series follows a group of kids trapped in the Glade, an encampment at the centre of a horrible maze. They don't know why or how they ended up there, but they try everything to make their way out.

The book that everyone has been talking about, and not just for it's title! Another self-help book, this book teaches you to care less and get more out of it using the Not Sorry Method. Again, this book is me to a T. I have started caring less by myself, but I wanted to give this book a go due to how many badass women rated it! Also I can't resist a good hype. Which comes to my last book…

Every Potterhead I know has either bought this, or seen the play, or both! I got this when it was £10 off in Waterstones when it first came out, which made the deal even sweeter. If you really (I mean, really?) don't know anything about this, it picks up the story nineteen years later following Harry and his son Albus as he joins Hogwarts, and struggles with the consequences of being Harry Potter's son. I have heard mixed feelings on this, and one thing I can say before reading or seeing it is that it is a completely different story from the seven others. So if you're imagining a massive Hogwarts reunion, don't hold your breath. However, I don't think it ever needed to be. With the success of Fantastic Beasts that has followed the Cursed Child, I think everyone is starting to enjoy branching out into more of the wizarding world, that isn't necessarily confined to Hogwarts.

My Winter Reading List

That's what I'm going to attempt to get through this winter, and if I get through some of these before I go travelling, I might do a travel reading list! Let me know if you would like that, and if you're reading anything good this winter.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Hope you all had a lovely day, and took some time to relax! I spent it with my family and Chris's family, and the day was filled with laughter, tonnes of food and games galore! It's been one of those Christmas's where it's been very chilled out, which is nice when you've got a lot going on in your life. But with New Year round the corner, and lot's of exciting things going on next year, I've got plenty to look forward to!

Even though I'm excited, I'm also slightly nervous. Next year is an uncertain time for me. For almost half of it, I will be travelling around the other side of the world! I honestly can't wait to go out exploring, discover new cultures and meet new people, but it's also something I've never done before. I've only travelled around Europe for a short amount each time, but this time I'll be a long way from home. I'm a real home bird, but I have a real passion to travel and see the world! It's nice to know that my family and friends will only be a Skype call away, but also I'm really excited to break free of routine for a while...

It will also be good to have some time to reflect. When we return, I'll be thinking about taking a real push forward with my acting career, and completing my teachers qualifications, so that will be the time to think about what my future holds. I've always been very driven in what I want to do, so I know that if I miss it while I'm away that I want to continue doing it!

I'll also have to get used to living out of a backpack- hard for a blogger when you are going yo be wearing only a small part of your wardrobe for 4-5 months! Going back to basics is something I think I might enjoy, but hence why I'm making the most of extravagant things like this dress before I go!! But you have to be comfortable when you're travelling, so I'll have to have my practical head on when I buy and pack for my trip.

We've already started preparing- our first tickets are booked, and we're making lists of things we need to do before we go. And it's going to come round really quickly; we've got less than 2 months to go! But I'm also incredibly excited about what I'm going to see and experience...and I'm going to be documenting as much as possible on here and on my channel! We've got most of our tech we're going to bring, and we've already started planning the content! Even though it's going to be a trip for us to enjoy, I really want to share it with you all too.

Merry Christmas!

This dress is the stuff of princessy dreams, and it's such it shame it won't be travelling with me! But I'll be wearing it as much as possible before I go to give it some love.

If you have any posts for travelling in general, or travelling around New Zealand and Southeast Asia I would love to read them! Also, if you have any travel post or video requests, let me know!

Winter Dressing with Apricot

Winter Dressing with Apricot

Winter is officially here! Not necessarily in it’s traditional form- we’ve not seen a glimpse of snow in the Shire! More in the wintery, cold, rainy, windy sense. Not nice. Weather like this really makes dressing a pain, and it normally ends up with me snuggled in jeans, and thick jumpers. That’s all very well when you’re just running errands, but what happens when you actually want to go out somewhere nice? This is my constant struggle. But I normally get over this by standing in front of my wardrobe and having a long hard think. I want to be warm and stylish, and there are two essentials from Apricot that I've been reaching for this winter.

- WARM YET CHIC JUMPER -
One thing you can never have enough of is jumpers. I live in them! This one from Apricot is beautifully tailored yet is still thick enough to keep you warm. I do have a vest top underneath, but it does the trick! The neckline sits really well on the shoulders, so you can wear straps without them showing, or wear a strapless bra and pull the shoulders down a little. The sleeves are my favourite! Carrying on from the flute sleeves from the summer, the thick material adds the structure for the sleeves to flow without a summer breeze. It also fits like a glove, so unfortunately no hiding that Christmas food baby…

- COATIGAN OR SNUGGLY JACKET -
The coatigan is a recent discovery of mine, and to be honest I need some more chunky cardigans in my life. This coatigan allows me to wear this outside on the freak yet unexpected mild days we’ve had, while I can still wear it indoors without it looking silly. The fur on the collar is so warm and soft, and the boucle material is thicker than I thought! Throw a big blanket scarf over this and you’ll be sorted.

I've always really enjoyed Beauty Kitchen's products, especially their moisturisers! I also love that they are 100% natural, so there are no nasties going onto your skin. This year, they have brought out DIY gift sets which are great for crafty beauty lovers! The two that caught my eye were *the Lip Balm set* and the *Chill Me Bath Bomb* set. I've always loved DIY sets and have always wanted to take a crack at making my own bath bombs for presents. I love the industrial packaging, and my mum's already been eyeing up the Kilner jar with the bath bomb set in! The sets also allow you to make a substantial amount- you get 4 lip balms and 300g of bath bombs!

The Anything Goes Soup

The Anything Goes Soup

It's the time of year when we take pleasure in hot soup warming our bodies. It's a welcome treat to come home to after a cold day and is like a snuggly comfort blanket. Even though I love a good Heinz tomato soup, homemade soup is another treat altogether! You know exactly what's going into it, and it is so easy to make. There are honestly no rules, and you can even make it from leftovers!

When it comes to ingredients, you can honestly add anything you want! Got one random carrot sitting at the back of your fridge looking neglected? Use it! Anything goes. Some examples of things you can use are:

Pumpkins
Potatoes
Bacon
Garlic
Chilli
Tomatoes
Carrots
Dried mushrooms
Onions

Products such as potatoes will help bulk up the soup, while dried mushrooms are a great alternative to meat. You can also add herbs such as sage to add flavour and depth.

The Anything Goes Soup

When it comes to the recipe, there are only a couple of steps, and they all depend on what ingredients you decide to use. Here are the basic guidelines I used to create the soup:

1. Cook the onions, chilli and bacon until golden in colour.

2. Soak the dried mushrooms in hot water along with any leftover stock and a vegetable stock cube.

3. Chop up the rest of the vegetables and add to a pot along with the stock. Simmer on a medium heat until the vegetables are tender.

The Anything Goes Soup
Once you have cooked all the ingredients, it's time to blend the soup! A hand blender is your best friend when it comes to this! It allows you to blend a large amount in a short amount of time, with little to no fuss (as long as you don't turn it on with soup on the blades). This Savisto 3-in-1 Hand Blender is really efficient, and we were surprised how powerful it was and how quickly it blended the soup! You think at first that it's not blending at all, but in fact, the blades are working away under the surface and the whole process takes all but a minute. The lowest setting was perfect for the job, and to clean all you have to do is detach the blender from the main motor unit and wash! Along with the hand blender attachment, you also get a whisk and a chopper bowl making this the perfect kitchen aid!

There you have it! One anything goes soup that you can whip up with no fuss. Are you a soup lover? And what's your fave winter warmer meal to chow down on cold nights?
